Hello Sketching Friends!
I hope you are all well and staying warm and dry. It is monsoon season in my part of the world and we are finally getting a lot of rain storm in Singapore. The cooler weather is a very welcome change and I am enjoying every minute of it.
Today I want to share with you another way to play and develop graphic thinking. We are going to consider SHAPES and their relationships with each other. SHAPE is a critical ELEMENT of Art & Design so developing a strong grasp will help to you become more expressive in your drawing and painting. These serious of drills and exercises hopefully will help you see your world in shapes.
The extra care to observe at the position and the PLACEMENT of shapes because where you place the shapes can determine and change their relationships with each other. Shapes like people can behave in an INTIMATE or CORDIAL or UNFRIENDLY way. You can also increase or reduce the tension by changing the position and the AMOUNT of SPACE between shapes. There are 3 predominant relationships we will explore.
SHAPE RELATIONSHIPS
A) ADJACENT Relationships (Side by Side)
B) OVERLAP & INTERLOCK (Shared spaces)
C) MERGE (Shapes within Shapes)
I invite you to try the demo exercise above to think creatively with shapes and mix & match in your own way. Questions to consider when you play.
What kind of relationships are you creating? (Friendly/intimate/hostile?)
Do you also see a change in spatial relationship & depth? (Front & back, Far & near)
Power Play (Who is dominating and who is being suppressed?)
The 2nd vide demo shows you how I translate the previous abstract exercise to sketching and painting. Hopefully the graphic thinking training will help you observe, breakdown the scene into shape relationships and empower you to create an engaging art work. Let me know how your thoughts about playing with shapes.
Final note. If you missed my recent live demonstration and conversation with Daniel Smith, you can now follow this link to watch the session on Facebook. I had a lot of fun chatting with fellow brand ambassador and host Julie Ann Karlsson (Sweden) during the session.
WISHING YOU A PLAYFUL & CREATIVE WEEK AHEAD!!
